CSEC Spanish & French

The Modern Languages Syllabus focuses on developing students’ ability to communicate in two of the languages in use in the Caribbean region. As students develop the competence to listen, speak, read and write in French and Spanish and interpret aspects of the culture in which the languages are embedded, they acquire the means to facilitate deeper interaction with our Caribbean neighbours.

The syllabus is organised around three main concepts: Functions and Notions, Settings and Topics and Grammar and Lexis. In the syllabus, emphasis is placed on the student’s ability to use the target language in a functional way. Therefore, the basic functions needed for communication are identified. Functions, however, are performed in particular contexts and, therefore, the settings in which the functions are likely to be performed are identified.

This approach used in organising the syllabus seeks to shift attention away from a purely structural approach to a more communicative one. It is expected that students following this syllabus will be able to carry out these functions in the target language based on the following topics – Home and Family, School and Career, Sports and Recreation, Daily Routines, Shopping and Travel.

CAPE Spanish

The syllabus emphasises the development of the four language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) and the acquisition of knowledge of Hispanic culture through the study of selected topics and contemporary writings of relevance to Caribbean society. Students develop multiple literacies and independent and critical thinking in the context of foreign language learning and in keeping with the UNESCO Pillars of Learning. While the topics have been selected to provide knowledge and understanding of issues pertinent to Caribbean people in a global context, emphasis will be on language competence rather than on detailed technical knowledge.

IGCSE Spanish & French

This syllabus is designed for learners who are learning Spanish or French as a foreign language. The aim is to develop an ability to use the language effectively for practical communication. The course is based on the linked language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing, and these are built on as learners progress through their studies.

The syllabus also aims to offer insights into the culture and civilisation of countries where the language is spoken, thus encouraging positive attitudes towards language learning and towards speakers of foreign languages.

Testimony

Spanish and Kedesha are the perfect marriage. Spanish is a vibrant language, and Kedesha is full of pizazz, vibes and energy. When you walk into her classroom you are immediately immersed into the language through games, crafts, songs, drama, cooking and just a jolly good time. Kedesha is hands down the best Spanish teacher I have ever met. She instilled curiosity and a love for the language in my daughter at a very young age. Thank you Kedesha for your energy and best practices.

Kedesha is an excellent Spanish Teacher. I had the opportunity to be a part of her class after not being in a Spanish Class for about 20 years and I was immediately reminded of how much I loved the subject. She was engaging, fun and very knowledgeable about the subject matter. I was committed to improving my Spanish and remained engaged despite my busy work schedule and family commitments. This I attribute to her unique teaching styles, her passion/love for her language and students.
